Rite-Solutions and the University of Rhode Island Awarded Innovation Voucher from Rhode Island Commerce Corporation

Middletown, RI (June 28, 2017) – Rite-Solutions, Inc. is pleased to announce that its Innovation Voucher application has been approved by the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation (RICC) as part of the Rhode Island Innovation Initiative program. The program helps businesses tap into the native R&D capacity here in the Ocean State. Rhode Island enterprises with fewer than 500 employees can receive grants to fund R&D assistance from a Rhode Island university, research center or medical center. RICC selectively funds projects to access the state’s outstanding intellectual capital in areas of technical need, based on their potential to grow the state’s business base. Rite-Solutions is one of six companies in the defense/maritime sector—a key growth sector for RICC—to receive funding in the history of the program.

A nationally recognized innovator known for adapting commercial technologies to support defense needs, Rite-Solutions teamed with the University of Rhode Island (URI) and the URI Business Engagement Center on the winning application. The partners plan to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address a specific undersea warfare problem—the predictability of equipment failures within a submarine’s combat system network. Professor Noah Daniels and his team in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics at URI will concentrate on utilizing machine learning algorithms that will assist in these predictions.

Professor Noah Daniels observed that, “From popular services such as Siri and Alexa, to competing on Jeopardy, to cancer diagnostics and facial recognition, deep learning has enabled automated systems to recognize patterns in large data sets, make predictions and recommendations based on those patterns, and interact with humans in natural ways to act on those recommendations.”

“We are excited to add Rite-Solutions to a growing list of companies that have partnered with the University through the state’s Innovation Voucher initiative,” said Katharine Flynn, Executive Director of the URI Business Engagement Center. “We hope this is a start to a much deeper partnership with this growing company.”

This initiative will enable Rite-Solutions to add AI solutions to existing software systems for the Department of Defense (DoD) and government customers to improve the readiness of operational systems. New predictive-failure technology could also play a role in complex commercial applications, such as health care. This dual-use application was a major factor in RICC’s decision to award a grant to Rite-Solutions.

Tom Santos, Rite-Solutions’ Chief Technology Officer, noted that, “We’re very excited about this opportunity to work with Professor Daniels and his team to incorporate state-of-the-art technologies into our solutions and create new capabilities that will advance our company’s prime objective – to deliver an Information Advantage™ to our customers.”
